The Avid/Pro Tools interface: A User's Perspective
Non-linear editing technology has enabled directors
to modify their picture project at any
point during the post process. This freedom provides significant creative
flexibility. The number one problem faced on the audio postproduction
of "Lord of the Rings" was how to create a coherent and
creative soundtrack for a constantly changing picture edit.
Unlike the preceding analogue-generation of work processes, digital
edit decisions can now be rearranged and restructured at the click
of a button. This is the greatest advantage of the digital medium
but also the cause of much angst and pain for post-production.
John McKay discussed the new workflows and changing technologies using
real-world case studies from the 30 second spot to the 2.5 hour feature
film. Example case studies include: Lord of The Rings, South Park,
and various commercial productions.
John McKay is the CEO and Founder of the
audio editing software company, Virtual
Katy. John has had a wide and varied career in feature films and
television as a film editor, assistant director and sound designer.
He has been managing postproduction audio teams producing soundtracks
to tight and demanding deadlines for over 20 years. An experienced
Pro Tools User with many tales from the battle scarred rooms of post
production.
